“For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person” (Mark 7:21-23).
When I set down this morning to write this blog, the post was supposed to be based on, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5), but the passage turned out to take on a tangential role. God set a slight course correction and broadened my focus.
Jesus said that we are defiled by what comes out of our hearts; “For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person” (Mark 7:21-23). On this day, Jesus did so much more than declare all food clean; Jesus exposed how sin defiles. Food is often emphasized in this chapter of Mark, probably because we are freed to pretty much eat whatever we want, and we like that, but in reality, food played a more happenstance role. See how easily the enemy distracts us.
Indeed, let us take every thought captive; let us subdue any arguments and pretensions that oppose the knowledge of God. Let us remain ever steadfast, and on our guard, for the devil sets distractions and stumbling blocks before us at every turn. But praise God that we are not left to fend for ourselves. Praise God for His course corrections!

Hi M, and thank you for leaving a comment! Perhaps, other than some matters of conscience like those raised by Paul to the Corinthians, my understanding is that all animals have been declared clean.

I love this. I’ve written a couple blogs on the compass. I have also sat down to write a particular topic only to have the Spirit move me in a different direction. Be proud of your accomplishments.

Thank you! I had one plan and God had another, and God won! 🙂

I’ve noticed God has a way of doing that. It’s like we think we really have a choice. 😉 I ran from my calling for a long time. It took a near death experience, and loosing everything I worked for 7 years for.

That makes two things I have read today on changing course. As a former Merchant Navy navigating officer I recall how course corrections were part of daily watchkeeping life to ensure that ships I served on were not taken off course by currents and wind (not to mention the challenges of navigation pre-GPS).
So now I am sitting here wondering/praying about what course corrections God is asking me to make.

the quoted passage is a strong call for us that purification within our lowly self is important for us to be in the proximity of our Lord, God Almighty..
We, as a believers of faith.. Is responsible in terms of striving how we are able to clean ourselves in and out.. Especially within, because comes the Judgement day, we will be questioned what was in our heart (romans 2:5)
